about

KOSMOS for string quartet and live electronics, was composed from 2011-2016. It uses a method of composition I call "trilogic unity" - meaning the constructs of determinate, indeterminate and spontaneous creative systems are all employed in equal measure. There is no score for KOSMOS, only a set of parts for the 4 string players. In addition to their parts, they have a set of both “duo” and “trio” material which is inserted into their parts using chance operations that determine which two or three instruments are playing, and when and for how long they play this material. The parts also point to durations of time when all four players form a "unity" of musical materials, as though a gravitational force brings 4 disparate elements together until a UNITY is formed, which then disperses into 4 separate trajectories The live electronics program running parallel to the live acoustic music uses a randomized set of sequences, separate and independent for each instrument, determining the processing, sampling and locating of each instruments’ electronic materials. In the live setting, there are 4-8 speakers located around the audience.
The complete work is comprised of four "quadrants", each quadrant has an expanding/contracting duration depending upon the program to be filled. The work can be 5-6 hours or ~2 hours in total duration; the latter is the realization which was recorded by FLUX for its world premiere at The Knockdown Center on October 30, 2018. I am grateful for the support from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, which enabled this performance to take place.
